CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Carbondale, Ill. mayor, Joel Fritzler, has joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition.

The coalition began in 2006 in New York City, designed to discuss strategies for stopping the flow of illegal guns in America's cities.

The group is said to be dedicated to making America's cities safer by cracking down on illegal guns.

"It is my opinion that this coalition of mayors isn't about trying to take guns away from law abiding Americans or stopping the legal sale of guns and ammunition," Mayor Fritzler said in a press release. "This organization is about being proactive, stepping up and taking the responsibility of protecting the law abiding Americans that live in their cities from the crazies, that we know exist, who have the only intent to cause wanton mayhem and kill innocent people."

Fritzler joined the coalition on Jan. 13 of this year. For more information about Mayors Against Illegal Guns you can go to www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org.
