POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Democratic committee party members hosted a forum in Poplar Bluff Sunday to interview nominees for Missouri's 8th District congressional seat.

Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson resigned her seat last week.

The meeting started at St. Andrew Lutheran Church at 4 p.m.

Todd Mahn was first candidate to speak. He owns two funeral homes and a cemetery, and is from DeSoto.

The wife of Markel Fitchpatrick, Ramona, spoke on her husband's behalf. Fitzpatrick is from Blodgett.

Rep. Linda Black is from Desloge and represents the 117th Missouri House District that covers St. Francois County.

Dr. Jack Rushin was the final candidate to speak. He is from Poplar Bluff.

The candidates underwent a question and answer period with committee members. Questions included Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and economy in the 8th District.

Mike Masterson, Chairman of Cape Girardeau County Central Democratic Committee, says candidate Barry Aycock of Parma withdrew on Friday. He adds it was decided late Saturday night that the meeting would be open to the public.

Democrats say they will select a candidate February 16 at St. Andrew Lutheran Church. That meeting will be open to public.

A special election will be held on June 4 to pick Emerson's successor.
