ST. LOUIS, MO (KFVS) -
Reliever Jason Motte and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed on a $12 million, two-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration, the team announced Tuesday.
Motte led the National League with a career-high 42 saves in 49 chances before free agency hit.
Last season, he went 4-5 with a 2.75 ERA and recorded 86 strikeouts and three saves in the postseason.
Motte is 17-13 with a 2.87 ERA and has had 54 saves in his fours seasons in the majors. Motte will be eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
Third baseman David Freese and left hander Marc Rzepczynski are the other two Cardinals that remain in arbitration. If they both fail to reach agreements then a hearing would be held in Phoenix, Ariz. next month.
