CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Keeping our kids safe at school is a subject we can all agree on. But now, one Missouri lawmaker has a controversial proposal on the table.

St. Louis Democrat Maria Chappelle-Nadal says she wants any parent who owns a gun to notify their child's school.

She thinks parents should be required to store guns safely and be held accountable if they don't.

There is no doubt, since the school shooting in Newton everyone's talking about gun control.

This recent proposal in Missouri  is turning into a hot topic.

It's part of a long list of proposed ideas for gun control.

One St. Louis-area principal isn't too thrilled about the idea.  He says it may help police more than the school district.

He also says the school could blame a parent for guns in their houses that they don't even know about, with guns sneaked into the home by their kids.

Here's what some parents in have to say.

"I think that will be a very smart choice, parents will have the knowledge of who has their hands on it and who can't," said Logan Hennecke of Scott City, Missouri.

"I totally disagree with making our gun owners public, people have concealed carry for themselves, shouldn't be public," said Jerry Cartwright of East Prairie, Missouri. "Don't agree at all."

Some school administrators we spoke with on the phone also had some major concerns with this idea. They said it wouldn't help at all and would only make for a bunch of unnecessary paperwork.

There's no word on when this matter could go before the full senate.
