PARK HILLS, MO (KFVS) -

Controversy is brewing over what to name a new bridge in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Should it be named after the late Cardinals legend Stan Musial, or a Park Hills man who died while working on that bridge?

The story has quickly exploded on social media.

Family and friends of Andy Gammon say, no disrespect to Stan Musial, but they want to see their loved one honored.

"It's still very hard yes," said Bob Proffer-life long friend of Gammon.

The memories are still very fresh.

Last March Andy Gammon of Park Hills was doing construction work on the new I- 70 bridge when the lift he was in toppled into the river from a barge.

His body was recovered two days later.

"I didn't realize I had lost my best friend, until he was gone," said Proffer.

Since the day he died, those close to Gammon dreamed about seeing him honored.

"I think for healing purposes, something would be good whether it be a memorial, a statue, a plaque...or something," said Proffer.

The recent death of former Cardinals player Stan Musial prompted a new push to get the bridge named after Musial.

Andy Gammon was a big time Cardinals fan, and his family wants to respect the late ball player.

At the same time, they want the people of St. Louis and those responsible for the naming the bridge to remember the young husband and father of two who died working on the structure.

"People started noticing Andy Gammon is deserving of having his name up there," said Jill Wagner-Friend of Gammon.

Wagner started a petition online.

In less than 24 hours, more than 1,400 have signed the petition.

Wagner says they aren't asking for pomp and circumstance, just a way to memorialize their friend.

"Anything where Tracy (his wife) can take the kids to, it's such a negative place now," said Wagner. "If she could take the kids to that place and say this is where your dad is honored, that would be a positive spin for him."

"For this community that's trying to heal, it's the right thing to do," said Bob Proffer.

While several lawmakers have shown support to name the bridge after Musial, Andy Gammon's close friends said on Thursday that they now have the support of some Park Hills area lawmakers.

There's also an online petition to name it for the Park Hills man.
