HICKMAN, KY (KFVS) -
KY 309/Broadway in the City of Hickman/Fulton County is back open after an investigation of a Wednesday fire at the West Hickman Baptist Church.
The closure of KY 309/Broadway in lower Hickman between KY 94 and KY 1099 was to allow pumping operations to remove accumulated water from the church basement to facilitate an investigation of the fire.
The West Baptist Church in Hickman caught fire Wednesday morning, January 23. The blaze was reported about 7:15 a.m. No injuries resulted from the fire.
The building was completely destroyed in the blaze. At the height of the conflagration more than 30 firefighters from various departments battled the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire chief says the church was an iconic image in town and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.
The church congregation numbers about 125 and this is the second building of the church to be damaged by fire. The Hickman fire chief says a fire in the 1930s damaged the church.
Motorists should avoid the area. Estimated duration of the closure is 6 hours.
