CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
A short standoff causes some scary moments on the grounds of Southeast Health Center overnight.
Cape Girardeau Police say a man was taken into protective custody after an incident in the hospital parking lot.
Cape Girardeau Police Sgt. Rick Schmidt says hospital security called police around 1:30 a.m. to report a man in a vehicle with a gun.
The hospital was put on lock down as police tried to negotiate with the man. Schmidt says the man was in his early 20's and threatening to do harm to himself.
Sgt. Schmidt says police tried to talk to the man by cell phone and other means for approximately 45 minutes, but he did not respond.
Eventually the standoff ended without incident when the man exited the truck and was taken into custody.
Schmidt says police found a rifle in the truck.
The man was taken in for a psychiatric evaluation.
