CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

A Carbondale duplex received major damage after a fire early Saturday evening.

Carbondale Fire Department Assistant Chief Ted Lomax says crews were called to the fire at 1433 East Gary at 5:43 p.m. Saturday.

By the time they arrived a few minutes later, flames were coming out of the gables on the duplex and the unit on the west side of the building.

The fire destroyed the west unit's basement contents.

No one was home in the west unit at the time the fire started.

Some residents in the east unit called in the fire and were able to escape uninjured.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. It's not considered suspicious.
