Woodland R-4 to get school resource officer

Posted: Updated:
BOLLINGER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

It's a first for the Woodland R-4 school district and the Bollinger County Sheriff's Office. The district is getting a school resource officer.

Several bigger districts have these, but many smaller schools don't.

Superintendent Jennings Wilkinson says times have changed.

Wilkinson says he and other school leaders had to sit back and ask themselves if they were doing everything they could.

"We have a great community, but in light of what's happened in the last few years across our nation, I don't think anybody can say we are immune to this and will never happen here," said Jennings Wilkinson, Superintendent. "We're just trying to do everything we can to keep kids and people safe."

"It's imperative that we secure our schools, a school resource officer provides security, but also brings education opportunities for children as well," said Bollinger County Sheriff Darin Shell

Saying that officer will also spend time in the classroom--working with kids on issues like social media, drugs, alcohol and more.

Funding for the officer will come from the school district.

This would be an additional officer, and not taking another deputy off the streets.

The school district and the sheriff's office will start interviewing candidates in the near future.
