SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

An elderly man was stabbed multiple times in Springfield's Bay neighborhood during a home invasion Thursday night.

Police told CBS 3 the 73-year-old man is expected to be OK.

Detectives are still investigating the incident but want to emphasize to the public that they do not believe it was a random act.

"It seems that the individuals were targeting this house," said Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney. "The neighborhood surrounding College Street hasn't been the subject of these type of home invasions so I want the public to know living in the immediate area that there is no concern that it is going to happen to them."

The incident occurred at 92 College St.

"What happened is that three Hispanic males broke in through the back door, one of them was armed with a handgun and during an altercation inside the house one of the subjects took out a knife and stabbed the subject," said Delaney.

According to officials the man was stabbed some 18 times and a large sum of money was taken from the home.

"First responding officers gave first aid to the subject called an ambulance right away and he was transported to Baystate Medical Center," said Delaney.

Many neighbors say they're shocked that something like this would happen in their neighborhood.

"It's very concerning and it's scary also," said Marie Hernandez.

Hernandez has lived on the street for the past four years.

"I actually have four kids of my own," said Hernandez. "I got a 13-year-old, he's a teenager and I have no concerns of him being around here or anything like that. But, now I'm more aware."

If you have any information about the stabbing you are asked to call the Springfield police at 413-787-6355 or you can text a tip to CRIMES or 274637. In the message type "SOLVE" and your information.
