CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -
The beginning of February also means the beginning of a $3-million fire state in Carbondale.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place at the new location for the 12-thousand square foot building.
The new station will have major improvements the entire department is excited about including a classroom, geo-thermal heat and cooling and individual bunk rooms.
"Firefighters stay in the station for 24-hours at a time," said Chief John Michalesko. "They work a 24-hour on, 48-hour off shift, so they spend a third of their career in the fire station. So, it's important that they have some of the comforts they have at home, as well."
The project will take about 10-months to complete.
