SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A man allegedly posing as an ADT worker has been arrested after police said he attempted to break into a Springfield home Sunday night.

"The victim was inside the house when the victim heard someone trying to force in the side door," said Sgt. John Delaney.

Police told CBS that 48-year-old Kenneth Spence tried to break into 165 Ambrose St. around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said when a person inside the home confronted the suspect, he said he worked for ADT.

"This male had a clipboard in his hand, he had another item that said ADT on it," said Delaney. "He said 'I'm here to check your security system.' We'll they didn't call anybody to come."

The victim became suspicious and told another family member to call police. That's when the suspect fled.

A person inside the home was able to get a license plate number for the car the suspect was driving and around an hour later police arrested Spence who was positively identified by the victim.

Police working the case called ADT who said they had never heard of Spence and that he does not work for the company.

A spokesperson from ADT told CBS 3, "ADT workers are required to show a badge showing that they work for the company. They generally work within normal business hours. Service calls are always pre-arranged and sales calls are usually pre-arranged as well."

The spokesperson went on to say that you should always request to see a badge if someone from ADT is knocking on your door.

The Pine-point neighborhood where this attempted break-in took place has been targeted in recent days. Police said four break-ins were reported in the neighborhood over the weekend.

"We're looking into whether or not this suspect was responsible for the other breaks," said Delaney. "Once this arrest took place we didn't have any other breaks"

Spence is facing charges for attempted breaking and entering at night with the intent to commit a felony.
