SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for all of Western Massachusetts, including Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties, in advance of a major weather system that is expected to move through the region on Friday. The Winter Storm Watch will technically go into effect Friday morning and remain in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday.
CBS 3 meteorologist Nick Morganelli says the entire region will see upwards of a foot of snow. Some areas in eastern Massachusetts may see two feet or more of snow. Strong wind gusts of more than 55 mph are expected, with near-blizzard conditions possible during the height of the storm, with visibility of less than 1/4 mile possible.
The National Weather Service advises that wet snow could cause some tree limbs to snap and bring down power lines.
