SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

According to Chief Communication Officer Azell Cavan, the Rebecca Johnson School went into lockdown as a precautionary measure while police conducted activity in the vicinity.

The lockdown occurred just around dismissal time and students were held inside the building until the area was declared clear.

Around 4:15 p.m. the lockdown was lifted and students were dismissed to their buses under police supervision.

The school department utilized an automated telephone service to alert parents to the development and inform them that their child would be late coming home from school.
