POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

The decision to cut Saturday delivery isn't a surprise to one former post office employee.

Bill Turner was actually the first African American courier for this area in Poplar Bluff.

"I started in July of 1966," Turner said. "It was a 1.85 an hour is what I was making."

Turner says he was honored to work for the post office. He says his job delivering mail never changed in his 28 years. But when competition entered the picture, cutting costs became apparent.

James Twitty says he still prefers his slower method.

"Snail mail because it takes so long," Twitty said. "I called down to Florida to make reservations in Destin, Florida to stay on the beach. They said give me an email address to confirm this and I said I don't have an email address. I'm about two steps above smoke signals."

With cutting Saturday deliveries, the post office expects to save $2 billion.

These cuts may be changing the perception.

"People see the post office as a job," Turner said. "See when I worked for the post office, I saw it as a career. If it's something you want to do, I think you go ahead and pursue it. But I think you should think about it."
