PALMER, MA (WSHM) -

A Palmer police officer was sent to the hospital after a struggle with a suspect Wednesday night. Thursday that man, Robert Kowalski, appeared before a judge.

Not guilty pleas were entered on Kowalski's behalf for a variety of charges including resisting arrest and domestic assault and battery.

An officer who isn't being identified at this time fell through an attic while responding to a domestic disturbance call involving Kowalski.

It was reported that Kowalski had choked his wife and assaulted two other women in the home.

"We sent three officers to the scene because it was reported that there were potentially three victims and there was a good deal of violence involved," said Palmer Police Chief Robert Frydryk.

When officers responded to 1287 Calkins Rd. they could not immediately locate Kowalski. A K-9 unit was called in and he was found hiding in the attic.

Police said Kowalski refused to exit the attic, which forced two officers to go inside.

"My understanding is that the suspect was actually laying across the rafters and had covered himself in some insulation so it was very difficult to detect," said Frydryk.

The officers attempted to take him into custody but he resisted - that's when both officers and Kowalski lost their footing and fell through the ceiling.

"Both officers fell through, the other officer was able to catch himself," said Frydryk.

The officer who was injured was treated for bruised ribs a separated shoulder and a wrist injury. He's on medical leave and is expected to be off the job for a couple of weeks.

"I just spoke got off the phone with him a little while ago he's very sore like the doctor said that he would be," said Frydryk.

Kowalski complained of back pain and was treated and released.

In court the Commonwealth told the judge that Kowalski has a history of domestic violence.

The judge ordered Kowalski held without the right to bail pending a mental evaluation and a dangerousness hearing that is set to take place next week.
