CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

It was a big shock for a Cape Girardeau pastor and his wife on Monday. The couple says they came home to find their house ransacked and robbed.

Josh Vandergraph and his wife had only been gone a few hours Monday afternoon. He says that's all it took for someone to allegedly turn their home in south Cape Girardeau upside down and make off with $1,700 worth of stuff.

Someone rummaged through everything they had. Vandergraph says the suspects took Play Stations, cameras, his shotgun and ammunition.

He says it looks like the thieves got in through the back door. Vandergraph wanted to make others aware to potentially keep something like this from happening to another family.

"They just trashed," said Vandergraph. "And, then all of our closets, the paperwork, the clothes, everything that we had in there was just out on the floor."

The family says they will be installing more security.

"We do feel, as others have experienced in the last few weeks, that we were targeted," said Vandergraph. "We do feel that we were being watched."

According to Cape Girardeau police, they are working to solve several other burglaries.

Patrolman Darin Hickey says people need to make themselves a hard target and don't take for granted your house is safe.

Hickey recommends motion lights and to lock windows and keep them covered.

Police also say it's essential that people report these crimes and any information you think might help solve them.
