When a Wilson County firefighter in training drove up to his own home on fire last month, it was a devastating loss.
Tracy Combs watched as his house in the Chandler Pointe subdivision was totally destroyed, but now a group of fellow firefighters are helping Combs and his family get back on their feet.
Recruits stood to their feet Tuesday as Nashville Fire Assistant Chief Kim Lawson entered the Nashville Fire Academy, but it was Combs who made the recruits stand to their feet and then extend their hands for hugs of support.
Nearly a month after Combs' family was able to safely escape the flames that began in an upstairs bedroom, Nashville firefighter recruits drove to Mt. Juliet City Hall to present Combs with a generous donation they'd collected among themselves.
Combs told his peers how much he appreciates the gesture.
"It's nice to see there are good people in a world that's not always so good," he said.
Recruit Fallon Washington came up with the idea to help and executed the plan.
"Anything can happen to any one of us. We can't go in this world alone. We always need help, and this is what we're for. This is what a brotherhood and a sisterhood is all about," Washington said.
Now, as Combs and his family rebuild the bricks and mortar of their home, he said there's no denying that the firefighter community has a bond that is tough to break.
