Post 9/11 veterans' jobless rate on the rise

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

January was a tough month for young veterans in the job market.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for post 9/11 veterans jumped to 11.7 percent in January. That is up nearly two percentage points from 9.9 percent the previous month.

The unemployment rate for veterans of all ages sits at 7.6 percent, which is lower than the national overall unemployment rate of 7.9 percent.

Why has it been harder for those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan to find work?

"Many of them have gone into the service directly out of high school and are lacking the experience of actually finding a job, and they're lacking in job interviewing," said Illinois Department of Employment Securities spokesman Greg Rivara. "Clearly what they're not lacking in is the skill to make a company successful."

There's also a huge disparity between men and women when it comes to post 9/11 veterans finding work. The jobless rate for young male veterans in January was at 10.5 percent. In the same month, 17 percent of female veterans in the same group were unemployed.
