CARTER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Missouri Department of Conservation has released a photo of a mountain lion that was spotted in Carter County.

The carcass of an elk calf can be seen in the bottom left of the picture.

The photo was snapped on Feb. 2 by a motion-activated game camera set up in the Peck Ranch Conservation Area.

An agent with the conservation department says elk are among natural prey for mountain lions, especially young elk.

The Mountain Lion Response Team confirmed these images and other signs at the location.

The conservation department receives hundreds of calls about mountain lion sightings but has confirmed just 39 since 1994. However, 27 of the confirmed sightings have occurred since 2011.

Mountain lions are naturally shy of people and seldom cause problems, even in states with thriving populations, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
