An 11 year old Columbus girl wanted to do something special to support the troops fighting overseas, so she wrote a letter to a soldier in Afghanistan. On Father's Day, she found out just how much that simple gesture meant to the sergeant who received it.
CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
A 12-year-old Gaffney, SC, girl led North Carolina troopers low-speed chase in the Charlotte area Monday night, according to the Highway Patrol.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol said they were called into assist with a chase just before midnight after Charlotte police tried to pull over an older model truck from South Carolina that would not stop.
Troopers said the chase went through downtown Charlotte and then back onto Interstate 77 before finally stopping near Interstate 85. Once the girl stopped, troopers said the case was turned back over to police.
Gaffney police said they don't know how the girl got the truck but the case started as a runaway/missing juvenile report. The girl's father first called police when he realized his daughter was missing from their home sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight, according to the Gaffney police report.
The girl's father told police his daughter threatened to run away in the past and had just recently started living with him. After running away from their Gaffney home, police said somehow she took the truck from the VFW on South Granard Street and drove to Charlotte.
Gaffney Police Chief Richard Turner said they do not yet know if she stole the truck or who she got it from, but the girl is back with her family. Turner said she fled after getting into some sort of fight with her father.
He said Charlotte police later gave them a call when the girl was located.
Charlotte police charged the girl with no operator's license, failure to maintain lane control, failure to heed blue lights and sirens and impeding the traffic with slow speed.
