CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

A Westfield man was arraigned Tuesday on a variety of charges after a father and son were shot during an apparent home invasion in Chicopee on Monday night.

William Wright's attorney waived his appearance in court. The 34-year-old is charged with multiple counts of assault to murder while armed with a firearm. The charges stem both from the alleged home invasion and the assault of an officer while trying to put him under arrest.

The incident happened at 103 Madison Street around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

"The father was accosted by the defendant at gunpoint," said Assistant District Attorney, Karen Szafranski. "He met him outside the house, brought him inside at gunpoint. He had a mask on that, according to the victims, looked like a Halloween mask."

Szafranski told the judge that Wright led the father back into the house, the son was woken up and Wright demanded money.

"The defendant, while masked, pointed a gun at the son, has him go into his room give him $700 or $800 in cash," said Szafranski.

After that, the prosecution says Wright tried to leave the house, but was cornered when he entered a screened in porch.

"The son and father took this opportunity to tackle the defendant and while they did that they were able to take off his mask and get a look at his face," said Szafranski . "While this was happening the defendant's gun went off several times. The son was shot in the buttocks. The father was shot in the chest."

Wright was found a short time later just down the road on Madison Street and when officers tried to arrest him there was a struggle.

"He grabbed ahold of one of the officers' guns while he was on the ground with him and other officers intervened and got into the fray," said Szafranski. "While they were on the ground, the defendant shot the gun - or the gun went off - and it went very close to one of the police officers' faces."

The officer suffered some hearing problems and was also bitten.

The father and son were taken to Baystate Medical Center, and were treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.

Wright has a lengthy criminal history, including a prior sentence on gun and drug charges and a prior conviction for armed robbery.

Wright is being held without the right to bail pending a dangerousness hearing next Tuesday.
