Rintala murder trial begins

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

A jury heard opening statements in the case of a Granby woman accused of strangling her wife to death.

Cara Rintala is accused of killing former paramedic Annamarie Cochrane Rintala, who was found dead in the basement of the couple's home in 2010.

An autopsy showed the 37-year-old died of strangulation and had suffered from multiple blunt force traumas.

During opening statements prosecutors painted a picture for the jury of a turbulent marriage involving three restraining orders, two divorce filings, and financial pressures with a mounting debt of $95,000.

The defense spoke of false presumptions in the case and continuously cited Cara Rintala's responsible nature and love for her wife.

The trial is expected to last around three weeks.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Cara Rintala would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

This case is the first since gay marriage began in Massachusetts in 2004 in which a woman is charged with murdering her lawful wife.
