HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

A study from the CDC reported that for the 11th year in a row accidental overdoses from prescription drugs have gone up.

The report shows that in 2010, 60 percent of the 38,000 drug overdoses were from prescription drugs.

For Ben Calcaterra, a pharmacist at Logan Primary Pharmacy in Herrin, he does what he can to make sure these accidents don't happen to his clients.

"We give strict counseling to every patient on how to take the medicine, what side effects may occur and what to watch for," Calcaterra said.

The study indicates many doctors and patients are unaware of how addictive these drugs area are and prescriptions are made for pain that can be managed with less risky drugs.

"The only thing that we can really do is suggest the patient to get help and contact a physician and aid them in any help that we can give them," Calcaterra said.

He said there is a thin line in knowing if someone has become addicted to their prescribed drugs or if they are truly in need.

"Basically your judging a patient, and in times of need, they may not know that they need extra help in that situation," he said.

Calcaterra said they believe addiction is a lifelong issue, that he thinks you don't ever get over it. He said you have to be ever vigilant and receive some kind of treatment.
