SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Ten people are homeless following a fire on Grove Street late Wednesday night.

The house had three apartments and members of the same family lived throughout the house.

"Our entire lives are just ashes right now," said Louis Colon. "I don't know what else to say."

Colon, who lived on the third floor apartment of 21 Grove St. returned Thursday morning to see what he could salvage.

"I'm speechless, you know," said Colon.

The fire started around 10:30 p.m. Firefighters were able to respond to the scene within three minutes, but the flames were just so intense they had to fight the fire defensively.

"It just happened so quickly," said Colon.

Colon says he was in the shower when the fire started.

"I ran down, I'm looking around," said Colon. "I'm looking for my parents obviously they live on the first floor. I was yelling at my brother. He's hard of hearing, I'm hard of hearing."

Blanca Rodriguez has lived in the home for the past 18 years.

"We tried to take everything out but, we couldn't because the fire was too quick," said Rodriguez.

She says her family is struggling right now but that they will be OK.

"It's hard, but we're going to do whatever we have to do to keep our family moving," said Rodriguez.

And though mostly everything inside the home is ruined, Colon says he is extremely thankful everyone made it out unharmed.

"We're just glad that we all got out of the house you know," said Colon. "I think everything else can be replaced."

Fire officials say the home is a total loss of around $91,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
