ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -
Precipitation totals will be on the rise across Connecticut this weekend thanks to a significant coastal storm that will move off the mid-Atlantic coast Saturday evening into Sunday.
Channel 3 Early Warning Weather Meteorologist Scot Haney said the storm will move off the coast Saturday evening and will track just to the east of Cape Cod on Sunday.
Haney said the storm will come loaded with moisture and it could produce an inch of liquid equivalent.
The state can expect a wintry mix of snow and rain to develop Saturday, possibly as early as Saturday morning.
There shouldn't be too much accumulation during the day Saturday, but Saturday night is when things could start to get a bit tricky.
Haney said that based on the current thinking, heavy wet snow is possible in the hills of northern and western Connecticut, and the weight of the wet snow could bring down tree limbs and power lines in that part of the state.
Meanwhile, Haney said, the shoreline should get a pretty good dose of rain with some accumulating snow possible at the tail end of the storm on Sunday.
Snow and mixed precipitation will taper off and end Sunday afternoon as the storm moves out to sea.
How the storm ultimately impacts our state greatly depends on the exact storm track, and forecasting snowfall totals is quite tricky due to the expected mixing.
But, Haney said, totals could range from an inch in southeastern Connecticut to more than six inches in the Litchfield Hills.
