MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -
The sheriff's office says a man faces charges after several dead animals and a thin horse were found on his property in McCracken County.
Chad A. Phillips, 28, of 520 Bonds Road in McCracken County, was charged with five counts of second-degree animal cruelty.
According to Sheriff Jon Hayden, a search warrant was attained on Thursday afternoon to search the Phillips' property at 520 Bonds Road in southern McCracken County.
On Wednesday, Animal Control responded to Phillips' property in connection to a number of complaints about a neglected horse.
According to the sheriff, County Animal Control Director Chrystal George and Animal Control Officer Kathy Coleman reportedly saw several dead chickens in the yard that were in cages and other places. A dead calf was also allegedly found in a stock trailer. The thin horse was found tied to a log without any food, water or shelter.
The horse was reportedly taken by animal control to a safe location for treatment by a veterinarian.
The calf was taken from the property by county road workers and later buried.
Sheriff's deputies assisted with the execution of the search warrant.
Phillips was taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.
Sheriff Hayden says there have been 23 recorded complaints in the past three years concerning this address and suspect regarding some type of animal neglect, or being overly aggressive.
Under a new animal control director, the sheriff says this is the third time animals have been taken from their owners since December. The sheriff says the reasons include abandonment and neglect.
