Posted: Updated:

The Cheshire Police Department arrested a 50-year-old man, who is accused of trying to steal a town fire hydrant.

According to police, officers noticed John Keeley of Waterbury trying to put a fire hydrant into his truck at the intersection of South Main Street and North Brookvale Road around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The hydrant, which was damaged in the previous storm, was never put in the truck.

Keeley denied the burglary and would not answer any questions from police.

He was arrested and charged with third-degree larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Keeley was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Meriden on March 4.
