(KFVS) -

The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued a "no travel advisory" as another major winter storm heads toward the state.

This storm will affect western, northern and central portions of the state. The highest accumulations are expected north of U.S. 54, including Interstate 70 from Kansas City to Kingdom City, I-35 and I-29. Kansas City, Columbia and Kirksville could see 8-13 inches of snow.

Rain with a chance of thundershowers are in the forecast for southeast Missouri Monday night into Tuesday.

MoDOT is asking everyone to avoid travel once the storm begins. Strong winds are expected to blow the snow around, creating a without effect making travel extremely hazardous.

The agency warns the high rate of snowfall, coupled with 30 mph winds, can create drifts that will seriously challenge even four-wheel drive vehicles.

MoDOT is transferring equipment and personnel to central and northern Missouri, preparing for snow that is predicted to arrive Monday afternoon.

"MoDOT is prepared and will activate crews to plow and treat roads as soon as possible," Elizabeth Wright, MoDOT state maintenance engineer said in a press release. "Unfortunately, the combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall means whiteout conditions may occur. That makes travel extremely hazardous and makes clearing roads very difficult."

Drivers in the western and northern parts of the state are being advised to check forecasts and prepare for alternate work and driving schedules to avoid being caught in the storm.

MoDOT is also warning drivers of delivery trucks, tractor-trailers and other big vehicles to be aware of the potential for high winds during the heavy parts of the snowfall.

If you have to get out, pack food, water, blankets and a flashlight with fresh batteries. Drive slowly, carefully and stay back from plow trucks. Bring a mobile phone. If you do become stranded, stay with your vehicle and call 911. Be aware that emergency responders may have difficulty reaching you

You can check road conditions at www.modot.org or with MoDOT's smart phone apps.

MoDOT also provides road condition information through our Customer Service Center. Dial 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636) to speak with a customer service representative 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
