Sequester makes cuts across the board; Public health hit hard

Posted: Updated:

The White House released new state-by-state reports on the impact the cuts will have on jobs and middle class families across the country.

One of the hardest hit areas- Public Health.

3.5 million dollars, that's the amount the white house says Illinois will lose for programs that try to treat and prevent substance abuse.

"I'm very frustrated, "says John Markley, the Chief Executive Officer for The H Group.

"What we are out to do is to do our best with the resources we have and when you reduce those resources that have already become very meager it puts a strain on the system and the community," he says.

Markley has been faces with cuts before, but nothing like this.

"Those are investments in your community and the health of the community, and when you don't invest in those you pay in other places," he says.

This will cause a slippery slope according to medical health experts.

The cut would likely lead to increased hospitalizations-involvement in the criminal justice system and homelessness.

"When you not investing in these areas that is what you will see," he says.

The government says; add to that, about 5,000 fewer children would receive vaccines for diseases such as whooping cough - the flu and measles.

And officials say almost 8,000 fewer patients would have access to life saving HIV medications.

"I think what we are doing like everybody else were just kind of waiting and seeing. we are not hiring we are not expanding in federal programs that have federal funding," says Markley.

Folks at the White House say, whether or not states can make up that budget shortfall on their own, depends on each state.

Illinois is already facing a multi-billion dollar deficit.
