The Overland Park Fire Department offers these tips regarding accumulated snow on roofs:
Houses are designed for and built to a 20 pounds per square foot snow loading in Overland Park.
Houses built with Steeper Roofs are less likely to have problems with collapse: those with slopes greater than 4 in 12 pitch. Snow does not accumulate in excessive depths.
Roofs less than a 4 in 12 pitch may accumulate excessive build up of snow in the valleys of the roof and should be "carefully" removed.
Removal of snow should be done very carefully.
Use a snow shovel, snow rake or come-a-long type of tool with a long or telescoping handle.
Do not walk on the roof..
Pull or shovel the snow down the slope of the roof. Do not shovel across or up the slope in order to avoid damaging the roof covering, i.e., shingles.
Signs of roofs experiencing excessive stress due to heavy loading may include but not limited to: cracking in ceilings and walls; excessive squeaking and cracking noises; visible movement from the outside.
If the structure is experiencing substantial or progressive movement, cracking or squeaking noises, vacate the structure.
