KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Thousands of people in the Kansas City metro are still without power Wednesday, and they will spend a second night in the cold.

Kansas City Power & Light Co. hopes to have everyone up and running by midnight.

It's been almost two days and people are still without power. Some are trying to cope but, after spending the night in a cold house, they don't want to try it again.

The temperature outside Georgia Taylor and her husband's home on Greely Street steadied in the 30s. Inside her home it's not that far off.

"It's 52 degrees," Taylor said.

Heavy snow knocked out her electricity Tuesday about 6 a.m. and they haven't had power since.

"It's actually freezing in this house. I've never experienced anything like this before and I've lived here since 1984," Taylor said.

They've been getting by with layers of clothes, plenty of blankets and anything that doesn't require heat to eat.

"I can't do anything. I had some cereal and milk, cheese and crackers, a little lunch meat. I can't cook anything," she said.

The snow-covered driveway prevented her family from leaving Tuesday night and Taylor didn't want to risk the safety of others trying to get them.

Kansas City Board of Public Utilities crews worked quickly to restore power to residents. With only 87 linemen covering the Wyandotte County area, they were able to restore power to most. At the worst of the storm, 21,000 lost power. At noon Wednesday, 1,900 were left. In total, KCP&L said they still have 5,800 customers without power about 6 p.m.

Andrea Nickerson is also one of those left. She has a sick one at home and a hotel was their only option.

"Each time you get ready to leave, you have to shovel out and, when we came back, we had to shovel to get back in. It's been a struggle," Nickerson said.

This time the Taylors said they may not risk another night inside if the temperature falls any further.

"I don't think I can spend another night, I'm actually freezing right now," Taylor said.

BPU said customers need to make sure the number they have on record is the same number they use when reporting an outage. If you don't, you may call back and find that your report isn't there.

But officials said they are aware of where the outages are and hope to have them back on by this evening.
