Sandy Hook Advisory Commission focuses on gun violence

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The commission created by Gov. Dannel Malloy in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown held a meeting in Hartford Friday morning.

The 16 members of the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission discussed gun violence prevention on Friday and heard from Connecticut State Police and the Connecticut Police Chief's Association.

Law enforcement members demonstrated the difference between certain firearms to the Connecticut lawmakers. The commission members also learned about the difference between clips and magazines.

As members work on crafting recommendations for change, they told Eyewitness News that the demonstrations were helpful.

"From a person who doesn't have a weapon, and has no intention of owning a weapon, to hear his side of owning weapons as a collector was informative," said Patricia Keavney-Marcua.

The focus of the panel was to review school safety, mental health issues and gun control laws and regulations and make recommendations to Malloy.

Members told Eyewitness News the goal is to figure out what gun changes would be appropriate to recommend to the governor.

"The spectrum of what we need review and hear from additional experts, that is so wide," Keavney-Marcua said. "That it's not realistic for us to have anything."

Active shooting training and gun laws were discussed. Police officials also made recommendations that panel members will review.

Members told Eyewitness News that they are working on the March 15 deadline set by the governor and hope to have their framework laid out to inform him of their progress.
