VIENNA, IL (KFVS) -
Crews are still on the scene of a fire in Vienna, Ill. that destroyed an apartment building.
The fire is at an apartment near the downtown square, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.
The mayor says the fire started around 9 a.m. Several departments were called to assist in fighting the fire.
Crews battled the fire for two to three hours before the building collapsed.
The building had three apartments, two of which were occupied.
A family of two who had lived in one apartment for two years was able to get out safely. They say they never smelled smoke until someone knocked on their door urging them to get out because of the fire.
A family of five lived in another apartment. That family was not home at the time of the fire.
The other apartment was being renovated.
No one was injured in the fire.
The building was formerly the Gholson Insurance Company, but had been turned into apartments.
No word on an exact cause of the fire, but the tenants who were in the building when the fire started say they think it originated near the back half of the building in the unoccupied apartment.
The Vienna Fire Chief says he and a team will continue to monitor flames into Thursday morning.
