STE. GENEVIEVE, MO (KFVS) -

A man charged with murder appeared in court Tuesday for an arraignment.

Curtis Smith was in court for an arraignment at the Ste. Genevieve County Courthouse.

Smith is accused of the murder of Kristi Murphy from in November 2012 at the MicroTel Inn.

He stood in front of Judge Timothy Inman wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackled at the ankles and in handcuffs.

Judge Inman read Smith his four charges of murder 1st degree, armed criminal action, stealing and misdemeanor of a controlled substance.

Smith entered a plea of not guilty.

The defense asked for a continuance and wants Smith to be mentally evaluated. The prosecutor did not oppose.

Smith is due back in court on June 5 at 1 p.m.
