MARION, IL (KFVS) -
Illinois gun owners are making the case for the right to concealed carry in the state. The bus left Marion Wednesday morning bound for the state capitol.
Among its passengers is a Union County woman who was a victim of a brutal beating at Anna First Baptist Church back in 2009.
Mary Shepard sued the state of Illinois claiming she became a victim because the state doesn't recognize the right to carry.
Shepard holds a concealed carry permit in two states and has completed numerous firearms training courses, but because she was in Illinois that day, she says she was unprotected when she needed a firearm the most.
"I think one of the reasons I suffered such a vicious attack is because we couldn't carry to protect ourself and when that day comes, and we can, I'll be ecstatic. I'll be ready," said Shepard.
Shepard's lawsuit is the reason behind a federal court order forcing Illinois lawmakers to create some form of concealed carry before June 9.
Shepard says she's traveling to Springfield along with thousands of other gun owners to see that it's done right.
