HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Holyoke police are still looking for the person who shot a father and his 5-year-old son in the Holyoke flats Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Alex Morse responded to the shooting that has Holyoke talking - a 5-year-old boy shot in the knee as he and his father walked out of a daycare at Lyman and North Summer street.

"Violent crime is on its way down, but I think the unfortunate reality is that crime still exists," Morse said.

The shooting shocked onlookers and people who know the boy.

"I just hope he's OK, hope to see him later when my mom gets back, she's with him right now," said Joshua Diez, who was at the scene of the shooting and knows the boy's family.

The shooting comes in the midst of a dry spell of violent crime in a city where many of the crimes are isolated between drug dealers.

"It's not drug dealer on random resident or visitor to the city of Holyoke, so I think that's important to keep in mind," Morse said.

The young boy was transported from Holyoke Hospital to Baystate Medical Center with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Morse says he and the police department have been taking measures to stop crimes like this from happening.

The city hasn't seen a murder in more than a year. The mayor credits the three community policing substations, the mobile policing unit and reintroducing the K-9 unit.

"Those strategies all together really helped decrease violent crime in the city of Holyoke, but we're an urban community and every city struggles with crime," Morse said.

Morse says investigators are still working to determine the exact motives behind Wednesday's shooting.

"We've yet to identify whether that was a stray bullet or a purposeful aim, we'll get that information as it comes out," he said.

Holyoke police say not many people are talking but that a couple of people have come forward with bits of information and they are working to piece that together to find the shooter.
