JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -
A tractor-trailer and a Mack truck were involved in a crash that later spilled fuel on the interstate on Thursday.
It happened shortly after 9 a.m. on Interstate 57 northbound lanes at mile marker 95 in Jefferson County, Illinois.
Illinois State Police say Alex V. Kennedy, 54, of Powder Springs, Georgia was following two tractor-trailers northbound in the driving lane on I-57. It was at milepost 95 in the construction zone. The two truck tractor semi trailers that he was following moved from the driving lane to the passing lane.
A 2003 Mack strait truck was parked in the driving lane with an arrow board activated. The arrow board the Mack truck was cautioning motorists to move to the passing lane.
Kennedy saw the Mack truck parked in the driving lane but was unable to change lanes or stop in time to avoid hitting the vehicle, according to troopers.
The collision caused Kennedy's tractor-trailer fuel tank to rupture, spilling around 100 gallons of diesel fuel.
Police say there was no life-threatening injuries. There was major damage to Kennedy's tractor-trailer and it was towed from the scene.
The Mt. Vernon Fire Department HAZMAT Team contained the diesel spill. The trucking company contacted Freeman Environmental to clean the spill up.
Kennedy was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
