Saline County sheriff warns of 911 'email hoax'

Posted: Updated:
SALINE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Saline County sheriff says an "hoax email" is making it's rounds.

According to the sheriff's office, the email urges the reader to dial 112 on their cell phone to be automatically connected to a state police dispatcher in all 50 states.

The email reportedly goes on to detail how a female driving alone saved herself from being sexually assaulted by dialing 112 when a police impersonator driving an unmarked police vehicle with a flashing red light attempted to pull her over.

The sheriff's office says the 112 feature is nonexistent and the email is a hoax.

Dialing 911 is the preferred method as many 911 centers now have the ability to identify your location when you dial 911 from a cell phone.
