FBI investigating incident involving Marion police officers

Posted: Updated:
MARION, IL (KFVS) -

The FBI is investigating an incident involving two Marion Police officers in connection to the way they treated someone who was arrested.

One officer resigned his position because of the incident. A second officer is currently on paid Administrative leave while waiting on a hearing before the City's Police and Fire Merit Board.

According to Marion Police Department, two officers arrested the suspect on misdemeanor and felony charges on Sunday, February 10, 2013.

According to a press release from the department, after being brought to the station for processing, the two officers were seen on video handling the person who was arrested in a manner that was reportedly against the law and departmental policy.

The incident was immediately brought to the attention of the Williamson County state's attorney who advised that the Illinois State Police do an outside investigation.

The ISP was contacted and they quickly began an initial investigation into the matter. Shortly thereafter, a command decision was made to turn the investigation over to the FBI. They formally took over the investigation on February 15.

That investigation is currently ongoing.
