SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Big news for the Southeast Missouri Food Bank as the group will open a new distribution center in Sikeston as part of a $1 million award from the Missouri Foundation for Health.

The health foundation announced it will award the money to the food bank over the next two years.

The contribution will go to infrastructure and equipment improvements like the new distribution center in the old RV America building.

At least $200,000 of the donation will go towards infrastructure improvements for the food bank's community based partners.

Southeast Missouri food bank Executive Director Karen Green calls this a historic moment.

"Poverty lives in southeast Missouri and it's not going to go away anytime soon, and the southeast Missouri Food bank collectively serves the 16 counties we actually have 170 agencies that do nothing but help people who are food insecure," said Green.

The Missouri Foundation for Health donated $3 million to other food banks in Missouri as part of the emergency food access project.
