Holyoke police arrest man they say shot 5-year-old and father

Holyoke police have arrested the man they say shot a 5 year-old boy and his father last Wednesday.

"It is a very violent and heinous crime that we are concerned about," said Holyoke Police Chief, James Neiswanger.

The police announced Friday morning in a press conference that the man they say shot a five year old and his dad is in custody and is no stranger to police.

"He has an extensive, violent history. The clerk of courts set his bail at $100,000," Neiswanger said.

According to police, 21 year-old Brian Marrero was the one behind the trigger last Wednesday when the boy and his dad were shot reportedly walking out of a daycare at North Summer and Lyman streets.

Neiswanger says the bullet was meant for the father, but ended up passing right through him, hitting the 5 year-old in the knee.

Police are still piecing together why.

"At this time we do not believe that this shooting is gang or drug related, the motive is still under investigation," Neiswanger said.

The arrest happened Friday night around 7.

After finally getting cooperation from witnesses and the community, police were able to track down Marrero.

They arrested him here at an apartment building at 955 Hampden Street.

"My officers did an outstanding job chasing down the leads, putting the case together and arresting what I consider a very violent felon, making the streets of Holyoke safer because of their actions," Neiswanger said.

Both the father and son sustained non-life threatening injuries. The 5 year-old is still recovering in the hospital.

Marrero will be arraigned Monday morning.

"The conclusion the police department would like to see is this gentleman behind bars for a very, very long time," Neiswanger said.

Marrero faces multiple charges including two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without a license and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
