SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said a drunk man yelling obscenities scared a group of Girl Scouts selling cookies at a local Walmart and tried to shoplift some adult products Saturday.

Police said they were called to the Dorman Centre Walmart about 7:40 p.m. where the mother supervising the Girl Scouts reported a man had yelled and sworn at the elementary school-age girls.

The woman told police they never said or did anything to provoke the man, but he was ugly towards them and frightened them, so she called police. After arriving at the store, police said they went looking for the man inside and found him detained by the loss prevention officer.

The store employee said the man, identified as 26-year-old Jerry Lipsey, was seen taking a few adult products from their boxes and hid them in his jacket, then walked out of the store without paying for them, according to the police report.

Police said while detained in the store, Lipsey had an open bottle of vodka and was yelling and cursing at passers-by. Officers said when officers took him to jail, he kicked doors, banged his head against the cage and repeatedly slammed his feet into things.

Lipsey was charged with shoplifting, public disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, police said. He was later released from jail.
