Nap time becoming a trend

Posted: Updated:

Remember being a child? The time in your life when someone actually required you to take a nap.

"They wake up a different child," said Dianna Hamm of the University School for Young Children.

These kids get two hours naps at the University School for Young Children.

"I will rub their back and tell them I don't understand why they don't want to take a napped," laughed another employee, Stephanie Stricker. "I'd give anything to take a nap."

Monday is National Nap Day. We discovered nationally, nap time is becoming a trend with some offices setting up dark quiet rooms for employees to take 20 minute naps.

"That would be awesome," said Stricker.

Around the U.S. bosses say it improves employee product and leaves fewer people wishing for another cup of coffee.

"I think it would make a lot of people a different person," said Alicia Pavelka of the University School for Young Children. "It does wonders for the kids."

However, we were surprised to learn not everyone needs a nap. Why? Some say eight hours of sleep is key.

"It would leave me feeling behind, even though some people prefer a nap probably," said Tricia Curnell of Leet Eye Care. "I get enough at night and I'm ready to go."

Melissa Crass agrees having a fun job helps.

"We stay busy," said Crass. "That's nice but I wouldn't mind a nap," she laughed.

Sleep experts say a 20 or 30 minute nap can actually restore alertness and lead to better performance and less mistakes. It also has psychological benefits to help clear your mind and reduce stress. But keep a planned nap to under a half hour, experts say that's short enough to avoid interfering with nighttime sleep.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, 43 percent of Americans ages 13 to 64 say they are sleep deprived. In another report 20 percent said they get less than 6 hours of sleep.

Experts say that can lead to all kinds of health problems from diabetes to depression.
