CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
Dozens of coroners and coroner deputies fell ill after attending a conference in Jefferson City this week.
According to Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton, the illnesses were reported after attending the Missouri Coroner's and Medical Examiners Association conference on Tuesday.
The three-day conference started on Tuesday and lasted through Thursday. Clifton says he took his deputy to the emergency room in Jefferson City Tuesday night.
Clifton says several people from southeast Missouri were sick for several days after the conference, including coroners and coroner deputies from Scott, Bollinger and Perry Counties.
Clifton thought he had escaped the illness, but Thursday night he started feeling ill.
Clifton says he has a bad cough and raspy throat along with other symptoms that have lingered through Saturday.
St. Francois County Coroner Jim Copeland says he is still recovering from flu like symptoms.
Clifton says that he can't say for sure that the illness came from the conference at the Truman Hotel. He did say, however, it is the common denominator and that these illnesses all hit after the conference on Tuesday.
James Coplin, Coroner for St. Francois County says the health department is investigating why so many people got sick.
