3/18/13 - Congressional Work Habits

Public approval ratings of the U.S. Congress continue to hover at an all time low. With that in mind, I scratched my head last week while reading that the Congressional Management Foundation had released a study detailing the working habits of a typical Congressman.

Life in Congress: The Member Perspective
A CONGRESSIONAL MANAGEMENT FOUNDATION STUDY, 3/12/2013

The study indicates that U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen average about 70 hours a week on the job when they are in D.C. and 59 hours a week when they are back in their home districts. 70 hours a week? Seriously? With the results that we are seeing. how does that happen? If I had an employee that worked that much with so little to show for it, I would be hard pressed to keep them on the payroll.

The study also found that about one third of a Congressman's time is spent on legislating, meanwhile more than three fourths of our Congressmen spend time traveling back home on the weekends-40 out of 52 weeks a year.

Folks, it is time for our politicians to change habits. If we are going to get anywhere in this country, our leaders need to learn to work smarter and not harder. We must insist that they spend more time solving problems in Washington and less time politicking back home. Let them know it is far more important to keep them working on the Hill, than glad handing at a pancake breakfast…no disrespect intended to the pancakes.
