CHESTER, IL (KFVS) -

It's the talk of the town in Chester, Illinois. Dozens of people may have to start looking for a new place to live after city officials say their landlord stopped paying his bills.

"We are just kinda stuck right now in a hard place and don't know where to go," Deanna Jennings, a tenant, said. "I paid 600 dollars to move in here and I have been paying my rent faithfully and last week our water got shut off."

In the lease agreement, the landlord agreed to pay the water, gas, sewer and electric. The renters agreed to pay $600 a month. The problem is city leaders say the landlord didn't keep up his end of the deal.

"Basically, what had happened was the landlord had sent his manager around and collected whatever rent they could and they had left town," Alderman Kenneth Dillman said.

Dillman says the landlord owes about $8,000 in electric bills and more than $3,500 in water, sewer and gas expenses.

"Some of these people trusted these people enough to pay cash and they gave them no receipt and here they are now being left like they are," Dillman said. "It's a shame."

KFVS tried to reach the landlord today, but no of our calls were answered.

"There's lots of families and lots of children involved and that's not right," Jennings said. "This man should have paid our bills."

"People like this need to be stopped," Dillman said. "It's going to cost good landlords that do maybe have things in their name. It's going to cost them money because in the long run, we've learned from this process."
