Children in the Heartland are battling a new, rare disease.
Washington, D.C. (KFVS) -
The U.S. Department of Labor says anearly $2.2 million grant has been awarded to help 400 workers in Missouri affected by Hostess layoffs.
The $2,183,749 National
Emergency Grant is to be used for training and re-employment services for the
workers.
Most of the Hostess Brands, Inc. workers were employed at 39 work sites throughout Missouri.
The grant also will serve Missouri residents employed at three
locations in Kansas and one in Oklahoma. It may also assist workers leased to
Hostess by other companies.
The grant, awarded to the Missouri Division of Workforce
Development, will provide assistance and other
benefits to workers they will receive as a result of their eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance.
Under this grant and the TAA program, affected workers
will receive the training and support services they need to successfully find
new jobs in their state.
In February, the department certified approximately
18,000 workers laid off in 48 states from 864 Hostess company locations as
eligible to apply for TAA benefits.
According to the Department of Labor, $1,257,671 will be released
initially. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made
available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

A fire in Oran destroyed a 2-story house on Tuesday morning. According to the Oran Fire Department, it happened at 4:05 a.m. at 907 highway W, which is right in the middle of town. Firefighters

The tornado, with winds up to 200 mph, cut a 20-mile stretch as wide as two miles through the Oklahoma City metro area. The medical examiner's office reported 24 people died, including nine children.
