MARION, IL (KFVS) -
The supply on certain caliber ammunitions began running out in January. Now two of the more popular rounds of ammo are in very short supply.
"We're having a hard time getting .22-caliber long rifle rounds and .9mm pistol ammunition, just your basic ammo is hard to get right now," said Justin Walters at Dunn's Sporting Goods in Marion, Illinois.
And now that shortage of ammunition is making things difficult for people who are taking their conceal carry classes and armed home defense courses.
"I had a lot of difficulty getting ammunition," said Chris Bennett of Marion. "I had a supply that I had previously, but lately I've not been able to buy it anywhere. Including here in Marion. We were over in Springfield, Missouri over the weekend and I stopped in at the Bass Pro Shop. they didn't have any of the ammo I was needing. I even looked on the Internet to try to but it online, and I can't get it at all."
There is no end in sight on the shortage of ammunition and that is causing some changes in how people are trained to shoot their weapons in handgun courses.
"They don't want to sell you more then a box or two at a time, and this course takes ten boxes," said Bob Alcorn a armed home defense instructor. "So our response is we've cut it down to five boxes in five weeks. We're just going to shoot one box per week instead of two, because of the shortage of ammo."
The problem isn't only here in the Heartland either.
"It's all over, we've had people from Colorado and Texas calling us up looking for .22-caliber ammo for us to ship it to them if we had any."
Handgun instructors say if you're planning on taking any handgun courses in the near future you should start looking around for your ammunition now.
And you might have some difficulty getting the handgun you want too. There's a shortage on certain models at this time.
