Does it Work Wednesday

One Sweep
By: Amy Jaquin

It is a broom that claims to sweep the competition out the door. Makers of the One Sweep say their rubber broom cannot only sweep-up dust and dirt, but also mop-up messes.

"And the box says to use short strokes toward you," reads Bobbi Ann Mason. She and her husband, Eric Sean, are happy to help us test the $10 One Sweep because they have a baby crawling on the floor, along with a beautiful but hairy dog named Buck.

Bobbi Ann and Eric may sound familiar because they're radio personalities. Their angelic daughter, Chloe, decides to help us make a mess on the floor! She eats animal crackers, and gets about half in her mouth and half on the floor. And their dog, Buck, is lounging in the living room, happy to get hair on the carpet.

The One Sweep handle snaps together, and the rubber bristles are soft enough not to scratch any surface. A squeegee completes the package... And makers say it works on wood, tile or carpet.

"For areas needing wet cleaning, just use soapy water," Bobbi continues to read.

"The bristles brushing action scrubs for you. When done, just flip it over and squeegee the floor dry."

But WHERE is the liquid going to go?

"That's the question, squeegee it where?" asks Bobbi.

Bobbi begins to squeegee a milk spill, with little luck.

"It's going into the crevasses and just spreading it, basically," she says as she works on the tiled floor.

And as the squeegee his the grout lines, it actually splatters the spill farther out onto the floor!

"Now I have to mop!" Bobbi laughs.

But the One Sweep does clean easily, just by rinsing under the faucet.

Meanwhile Chloe continues doing her part to make a mess! We help her spread more crumbs around, to give the One Sweep a better test.

"Short strokes toward you," Bobbie reiterates. "Now it's working. It works better with it dry. The bristles can get into the cracks, then."

So the One Sweep does better on dry stuff... But there are still some shortcomings... The head isn't angled to reach closer to the high chair legs... And it's also to wide and low to easily sweep the crumbs into a dust pan.

Finally, we test the claim it grabs pet hair from carpeting. Bobbi starts in a high-traffic area...

"We're cleaner than I thought!" she says as she looks at the bristles and sees no hair. But then she moves to the spot where Buck was laying and we watch as the One Sweep creates big round rolls of hair on the carpeting.

"We just brushed him," Bobbi laughs. "He didn't just have clumps of hair fall out of his body!"

But the One Sweep only rolls the hair into a ball... The bristles don't grab it.

"We're weaving it!" she continues. "We'll make a blanket out of it later! Ha!"

We get the same disappointing result when we move the couch, to try the area the vacuum can't reach.

"It's still just making a wad of hair," Bobbi summarizes.

Overall, the $10 One Sweep is leaves a lot to be desired. It's certainly not going to replace your normal broom or vacuum. We give it a D.
